Solar System Guide – Mobile App For iPadOS

Overview

The goal of this project was to design an app for iPadOS that functions as an advanced guide to our solar system. It is focused on a visual that gives the users a space feeling. All necessary information are provided in a clean and easy to understand interface.

Problem

There are only a few similar apps on the market. Most of them are too bloated. The key problem is to provide as much knowledge as possible, while ensuring a clean interface that is expandable for upcoming features.

Solution

The architecture of the app is minimalistic and focused. The menu provides space for future navigation points. In addition to this, the whole app was designed to be able to function as a module. This way, there is more than one option to expand the app.

Users

There are two main personas. Adult users who are interested in space and the future. A lot of them are also gamers who already had contact with space like games or similar apps. Second, young adults who need knowledge about this subject for school projects and classes.

Key Features

The navigation inside the app is minimalistic. Every subject have detailed but relatively short texts. A nice visual design that is modern and appropriate for the topic.

User Flow Diagram

I created user flows based on the brief, several user stories and a comprehensive research of personas.

Wireframes

After analysing similar apps and identifying the focus of the design, wireframes were created.

STYLE GUIDE

Color Palette

The interface uses a lot of pictures. Three core colors where used to complement the pictures and the glass morphic bars.

Typography

A distinguished space like environment needs special typefaces. The app title on the start screen uses Orbitron. This is a very clear and appropriate typeface for the space theme. Red Hat Display offers a clean and functioning font for headings. Finding a proper body text was not an easy task. After a lot of testing, Abel was the clear winner. It complements the headings font and fits very good into the theme. The readability of Abel on this background is also especially good.

I learned about serif and sans serif typefaces,
about varying the amount of space between
different letter combinations, about what makes
great typography great. It was beautiful.
